The Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) presented the Bloomfield Public Schools' Board of Education with its sixth consecutive Leadership Award in November, 2007. This prestigious award was created in 1998 to recognize excellence in leadership activities by local boards of education. To be eligible for the award, a board must meet or exceed stringent standards established by the State in the areas of effective teamwork and group decision-making.

Among the criteria needed for this award are:

  • The board actively works with the community to inform them and to gain
  • feedback from them;
  • The board has developed and adhered to a code of conduct;
  • Board members actively participate in board development activities;
  • The board does an annual self-evaluation;
  • The board concentrates on policy issues; and
  • Board members are active on the regional, state or federal levels.

In order to be eligible for the award, boards must fulfill 22 out of 30 different requirements. Former Board Chairperson Ms. Shirley Thompson and Superintendent of School Dr. David G. Title accepted the award from Education Commissioner Mark McQuillan this year (see picture below).
