History

The Bloomfield Public School District contracted with Big Picture Learning to assist in designing the Big Picture High School, a new magnet high school.  The school is based on the idea that students learn best when they are actively engaged in their own education through personalized learning, authentic work, adult mentors and family involvement. The school opened in the fall of 2005 with 9th graders and those students were the first graduating class of the school.  All of whom were accepted to a post secondary institution.

Big Picture Learning is located in Providence, Rhode Island.  It was initially funded by the Gates Foundation to open small schools across the nation.  There are presently over sixty schools.  The innovators of the Big Picture School design, Dennis Littky and Eliot Washor, are the co-directors of Big Picture Learning and have operated Big Picture Schools for the past twelve years.  Learn more about Big Picture Learning and Big Picture Schools at www.bigpicture.org.
