We have created a personalized learning atmosphere that supports students from diverse backgrounds in a tailored learning environment. The academy prides itself on the commitment it has to the “whole” child focusing on the achievement of their individualized goals.
The Learning Academy at Bloomfield offers:
Each student must coninue with their core academics.
The student will participate in community service initiatives.
The student must successfully complete a counseling program focusing on positive behavior, vocational and social skill building.
Academic Component The students will continue to follow the district requirements for graduation including CAPT testing but in a smaller setting. The students will be expected to proceed with the curriculum at an intense pace so as to earn credits within an adjusted time line utilizing PLATO educational software. Each PLATO online course incorporates basic and higher levels of learning within the rigor and relevance dimensions of a high school curriculum. PLATO Credit Recovery Solutions allow students to complete course requirements more rapidly, recover credits, regain self-confidence, and graduate on time. The beliefs of the Bloomfield School system are “hard work and perseverance are necessary to achieve one’s potential.” A student participating in this program may have difficulties with large classrooms, plagued by extensive social/emotional conflicts or simply let their credits slip away over the years. The Bloomfield Alternative Academy students will utilize the PLATO Educational Software, along with tutoring guidance and support. They will be able to participate in a program that is individualized and closely monitored in order for them to achieve their credits so as to move forward on in their life journey. Community Integration: Students participating in the program are expected to “give back” to the community. Often our students are unfamiliar with what Bloomfield and Hartford County have to offer our young people and what they can give back. The program’s philosophy is for the students to learn how to be strong, knowledgeable and giving community participants. “The entire community shares the responsibility for the education and development of its children.” Through outreach and partnerships with the program and community the students and families will be able to access resources, opportunities for service and potentially occupational prospects for them within the community. “Everyone is responsible for helping others.” Counseling: The students will have access to group and individual counseling with a master level school social worker. The counseling approach is a solution focused and problem solving model that provides students with means for solving their problems and gaining more effective coping mechanisms. Family involvement will be encouraged but only with the full consent of the student. “A healthy, safe and secure environment” not only physically but emotionally will be greatly emphasized. Along with the entire Bloomfield School District’s mission the program will promote the following “honesty and respect are essential in developing trust and maintaining positive relationships.”
